What Has Surprised You The Most?

Can you tell what has surprised you most about any aspect of the internship?

  1. Well I am not trying to put down the program but to say that the program has been running for this long it really surprises me at how unorganized things are. The thing is most of the things that are out of place are simple things, for instances meeting times and people showing up, classroom times, questions that need to get answered seems like no one noes the answer to them. Like I said I think it is just a few nit picky things that are just out of place and seems like they need to be taken care of.

  2. What I'm about to say is not really a surprise but something I am looking foward to doing before the end of this session. I'm talking about doing hands-on research in the Savannah River lab or any other laboratory. This I am really interested in doing.

  3. What surprises me the most is the connection that I have with the other interns, TA(teacher assisstants) and the directors. I thought it was going to be nothing but classes, classess and more classes. But its not the directors ask us what we want to do, She plans things like cookouts for us. I really like this program over all. I hope it entails alot more surprises that I like.

  4. The most surprising thing about the field station internship is probably how relaxed the environment is. I was expecting a more strict experience, but was pleasantly surprised when I discovered how friendly the TAs were and how approachable the professors are. I was also surprised at how nice our living arrangements are.

  5. What has suprised me is the fact I just learn and get paid. Like, I have am widening my knowledge in environmental science and also going to transfer my credits, but at the same getting monetary compensation. It is very fascinating. I dont have to work myself off to get these rewards. It's really suprising.. Isn't it?

  6. The most surprising aspect of the program to me is the day off. Since I'm taking one class I only attend class MWF so tues. and thurs. I get to sleep in. Don't get me wrong I love doing the work and going to class. But i see my roommate get up on those days I look at my alarm clock and can sleep for another couple of hours that puts a big cool-lade smile on my face. Then I wake up well rested and ready for a another day at SRSEFS

  7. I love the freedom that the program has. But the program definitely started off a little rocky. There was so many questions that went unanswered!! I love the relationship that i have with my teacher and the TA for my class. We act like a family and i didn't expect that at all. But it makes it easier for me to get up in the morning and go to class. Another thing is the size of the classes. Very small and intimate!! I love it. When i started the program i expected it to be at least 50 students. if not more. But it wasnt and i think it makes things alot easier

  8. What has suprised me the most is the classes. How dr. wilson was talking i thought i was going to have headache, after headache, after headache. However, its been pretty easy. Dr. Wilson could have fooled me. I really like his class. Sometimes it takes him forever to get to the point though, but other than that its straight.

  9. While I guess what has surprised me the most well is actually how much information we have been exposed to. With both courses there has been an abundance of information that we have been exposed to. Some useful and some not so useful but it is there for us to use. In Env 306 we have been introduced to a world full of possiblities as to what I may be able to do with my front lawn as far as a land use and the decisions I make with it. Take that same front lawn in Env 492 and we can collect data on the type of ecosystem and wildlife management practices that can be implemented so I think that is great that we have this much information that we go back and share with others.

  10. Some other things that have surprised me about the program. The TA's are very thoughtful and always keep in touch with us, The Director Ms.Grant REALLY works and put in time for us and the program and I think that shows character and being very Determined. Like every program there are kinks in it but I have had the best time working and being around the people here. I wish I could stay for second session but I have a few things to do but I am definately coming next SUMMER!

  11. I am suprised the look on his face on the first day is not really how he acts. I mean Mr. Wilson. On the first day, I asked myself if I could ever learn anything from a man so mean( I just interpretted his looks for his acts) Anyway, my thoughts were negative. Mr. Wilson is such a man with an open mind, and also strives to see that his students learn all they can. I believe that gives him a sense of enpowerment.

  12. What have supprised me the most is that I came back to the exact same program that I came to last year and it has gotten so much better than I expected.Take that same front lawn in Env 492 and we can collect data on the type of ecosystem and wildlife management practices that can be implemented so I think that is great that we have this much information that we go back and share with others. These ar the most things that have suprised me while being here this session. Cant wait till next session.LOL Ill be here

  13. the question is what has suprised me the most about the program. I would have to say the fact that there are so many wonderful people working around us.I love the freedom that the program has. But the program definitely started off a little rocky. There was so many questions that went unanswered!! I love the relationship that i have with my teacher and the TA for my class. 14. What has suprised me the most are things that Mr. Wiloson teach us. He says that in some way or form, almost all cultures have recognized the importance of nature and its biological diversity for their societies and have therefore understood the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance. Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. For example, a larger number of plant species means a greater variety of crops; greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms; and healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters. I loved that class that day.

  15. I was suprised how Mr. Wilson went really deep with his lessons. I learned Space is often incorrectly thought of as a vast, empty vacuum that begins at the outer reaches of the Earth's atmosphere and extends throughout the universe. In reality, space is a dynamic place that is filled with energetic particles, radiation, and trillions of objects both very large and very small. Compared to what we experience on Earth, it is a place of extremes. Distances are vast. Velocities can range from zero to the speed of light.

  16. What has suprised me is that Mr.Wilson has taught out the box since we have been here. I love the Space and he said that The troposphere is the lowest region of the atmosphere. It starts at the Earth's surface and extends to the tropopause, the upper boundary of the troposphere. Almost all clouds and weather occur in the troposphere. It contains about 99% of the atmosphere's water vapor and 90% of the air. Above an altitude of 2 miles (3.2 km), a person who has not become adapted requires supplemental oxygen or a pressurized environment. Approximately half of the Earth's atmosphere is below an altitude of 3 miles (5 km). I think i was a little too excited that class!

  17. What has suprised me is the way that we learn things. while one may relate there topcs to certain things, Mr. wilson relates his topics to science and the space all the time. He often says The Sun constantly emits particles, known as corpuscular radiation, and electromagnetic radiation in the form of light and radio frequency noise. The constant stream of these forms of radiation is called the solar wind. In addition, at seemingly irregular intervals, there are solar flares, the explosive ejection of particles (mostly protons and electrons) accompanied by sporadic emissions of electromagnetic radiation. So I take as many notes as I can.

  18. What suprises me the most is how in depth Mr. Wilson goes in his lessons. He has us thinking ou the box. I learned The major oceanic divisions are defined in part by the continents, various archipelagos, and other criteria: these divisions are (in descending order of size) the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean (which is sometimes subsumed as the southern portions of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans), and the Arctic Ocean (which is sometimes considered a sea of the Atlantic). The Pacific and Atlantic may be further subdivided by the equator into northerly and southerly portions. He be loving the Ocean and space.

  19. When i signed up for environmental Science i thought that i was going to be outside like all most everday experiencing nature. Well this is basically and outdoor program. But that is not the case. Mr wilson is the best teacher simply because he doenst take us outside to just stand in the sun. We enjoy the invention of airconditioning.. Where ever we go if we go somehwere we are in AC. In the classroom on campus, on the van, at at out field trips everywhere. I get the feling he dont like the outside to much his self even he is an science teacher. I think all those years of teaching grad school in the ac ha made him a little to comortable. But one of these day i think he will have to stepp outside of his box anf get his hands REAL DIRT!!!

  20. Something else that has shocked me is the amount of free time i have had here. My bio teacher made it seem like there was going to be no time for me to just relax and do what i want for a day. In actually there is a whole lot of time. Even if you have two classes you still have over half a day to yourself. One thing my teacher told me was that we wouldnt have time to do anything at all. She wanted us to focus on nothing but the clas we were taking. How ever when we got here we were only taking one class that meet tue, thur, and Sat. And then on top off that if we covered all the material we needed to in a class session sometime we got out early. One day we got out at 9:30 because we covered all the mater fro the whole week in the previous class period. God gotta love that teacher!!!!!!!!!! I wish i could have a class schedule like this during the regular school year.
